چکیده

We analyse the Las Campanas Redshift Survey using the integrated conditional density (or density of neighbors) in volume-limited subsamples up to unprecedented scales (200 Mpc/h) in order to determine without ambiguity the behavior of the density field. We find that the survey is well described by a fractal up to 20-30 Mpc/h, but flattens toward homogeneity at larger scales. Although the data are still insufficient to establish with high significance the expected homogeneous behavior, and therefore to rule out a fractal trend to larger scales, a fit with a CDM-like spectrum with high normalization well represents the data. Subject headings: galaxies: clusters: general large-scale structure of universe Following seminal work of Pietronero and coworkers, (see e.g. Pietronero et al. 1996), the possibility of a large-scale fractal distribution of the galaxies has been investigated by various authors. In the current literature, however, there are several conflicting estimates of the largest scale at which the galaxy distribution can be approximated by a fractal, ranging from a few Megaparsecs (e.g. Peebles 1993), to 20 Mpc/h (Davis 1996), to 40 Mpc/h (Cappi et al. 1998), up to more than 100 Mpc/h (e.g. Pietronero et al. 1996). A fractal distribution with dimension D is characterized by the property that the correlation function

The Universe on Very Large Scales: A View from the Las Campanas Redshift Survey

The Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS) is among the first galaxy redshift surveys to sample a reasonably fair volume of the local Universe. On the largest scales (≫ 100 h Mpc), the galaxy distribution appears smooth; on relatively small scales ( < ∼ 10 h Mpc), the LCRS tends to confirm the clustering characteristics observed in previous, shallower surveys. Here, however, we concern ourselves p...

We present the rst results of the Karhunen-Lo eve (KL) eigenmodes applied to real data of the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS) to simultaneously measure the values of the redshift-distortion parameter, = 0:6 0 =b, the linearly extrapolated normalization, L 8 , and the CDM shape parameter, ? = 0 h. The results of our numerical likelihood analysis indicate a low value of = 0:300:39, a shape pa...

Topology of the Las Campanas Redshift Survey

The topology of the Las Campanas Redshift Survey is analyzed using Minkowski functional statistics, taking into account the selection effects of the survey. The results are compared with the predictions of some toy models of structure formation, including the Standard Cold Dark Matter Model and topological defect-based models. All of the toy models have a scale invariant primordial spectrum of ...

Density-Dependent Luminosity Functions for Galaxies in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey

Galaxies in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey are classified according to their spectra, and the resulting spectral types are analyzed to determine if local environment affects their properties. We find that the luminosity function of early-type objects varies as a function of local density. Our results suggest that early-type galaxies (presumably ellipticals and S0’s) are, on average, fainter w...

An Overview of the Las Campanas Distant Cluster Survey

We present the Las Campanas Distant Cluster Survey, which has produced over a thousand galaxy cluster candidates at 0.35 < z < 1.1 (see Gonzalez et al. 2001 for the full catalog). We discuss the technique that enabled us to use short (∼ 3 min) exposures and a small (1m) telescope to efficiently survey ∼ 130 sq. deg. of sky. Follow-up imaging and spectroscopy using a wide array of telescopes inc...
